How to become a bartender in Oklahoma

Mandatory ABLE employee license required by the state to bartend here

Oklahoma bartenders need an ABLE employee license, but that won't teach you the job. Here's your path from zero experience to your first shift, plus the rules and pay to know.

Quick answer

Oklahoma requires everyone who serves, mixes or sells alcohol at a licensed bar, restaurant or store to hold an ABLE employee license, which lasts 2 years. The venue holds the liquor license; your employee license is a separate license in your own name. You must be 21 to mix drinks, or 18 to serve. Learn the job first, then get your ABLE employee license.

Training

Everyone getting an ABLE employee license for the first time must complete an ABLE-approved alcohol server course, online or in person, and upload the certificate within 14 days after the license is issued. You don't retake it when you renew on time, but if your license lapses, you apply and train again as a new licensee.

Do you have to go to bartending school in Oklahoma?

No. Oklahoma doesn't require bartending school. The ABLE employee license is about serving alcohol safely and legally; it doesn't teach you to make drinks or work a bar. An online course lets you learn the tools, pours, cocktails and service at your own pace.

Does The Bar School offer job placement?

No. We don't place students in jobs. Bar Ready shows you what the job involves and how to get hired, with a resume guide and template and what to expect when you apply. Then you apply to bars and restaurants near you.

How long does it take to become a bartender in Oklahoma?

Bar Ready is self-paced, so you go as fast as your schedule allows. After that, timing depends on how long it takes to get your ABLE employee license and the jobs near you.

Is the Bar School certificate a Oklahoma license or TIPS certification?

No. Your Bar School certificates of completion, one for each Bar Ready course, show employers you finished our training. They aren't a government license or permit, and they don't replace your ABLE employee license or any state or local requirement.
